Cornelia Herfurtner is a sculptor. Cornelia Herfurtner’s art combines old craft techniques with current questions. She explores public life, power, and the right to protest by making wood reliefs and intarsia pictures. [A wood relief is an image carved out of wood. Intarsia pictures are images or patterns made from different pieces of wood. The pieces of wood are put together like a puzzle.] In this way, Cornelia Herfurtner creates a connection between the past and the present.
Cornelia Herfurtner treats her materials with care. This is also part of her art. Care is an important part of how she understands our responsibility to each other. Her art shows how our right to protest is being restricted. It reminds us of these rights so that they do not go forgotten in society.
In the cloister and inner courtyard of the Kunsthalle, Herfurtner brings together old and new works. They are held in place by wooden frames in bright orange or black and yellow.
Cornelia Herfurtner (DE) lives and works in Berlin. She works both under her given name and in various collective contexts. From September to November 2022, she was in New York researching social movements and the history of engaged art practices from Heartfield to Decolonize this place.
