In November, artist Ibrahim Mahama talks to Dr Anika Reineke (curator of the Textile and Applied Arts Collection and the Henry van de Velde Museum of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz) in Chemnitz about his installation TRANSFER(S). TRANSFER(S) was the artist’s largest project in europe to date and was realised in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. It will be continued at the end of November with a symposium at the SCCA in Tamale (Ghana). Among other things, the discussion will focus on the history and politics of textile production, trade and commodity routes. Like Osnabrück, Chemnitz has been an important centre of linen production and later of the textile industry since the Middle Ages. In both cities, economic success was largely based on colonial exploitation.
The lecture followed by a discussion will take place in Chemnitz Open Space. Registration is not necessary. The event will be held in English.
A cooperation between Kulturhauptstadt Europas Chemnitz 2025, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Chemnitz Open Space and Kunsthalle Osnabrück.
