Elisabeth Erdmann-Macke (born 1888), is still overshadowed by
her first husband, August Macke. This narrated biography attempts to
put her in her own right, to acknowledge her talents and merits. In the
few years of life together with Macke, she was his partner on an equal
footing, encouraged him in his artistic work and was artistically active
herself. In 1914 Macke was killed shortly after the outbreak of war.
Her second husband. Lothar Erdmann was murdered by the Nazis in 1939.
Despite all the blows of fate, the young widow does not give up, raises
five children and looks after Macke’s work. Without her prudence and
energy, a large part of the paintings would be lost.
The author Margret Greiner creates a lively portrait of this
extraordinary woman on the basis of sources evaluated for the first time
and embedded in the historical context.
The reading is organised by the Buchhandlung zur Heide, the Altstädter Bücherstuben and the Buchhandlung Eicholt. Admission is 12€ per person. Tickets are available at the bookshops.
