Exhibition

die Blaue Distanz

In the new building of the Kunsthalle there is a concrete ceiling. Its only been uncovered recently. This concrete ceiling has been an inspiration for the artists of die Blaue Distanz. They observe the exhibition space. Does it remind one of an underground car park? Is it a stage? How can this space be used? How do we encounter each other in this space? It will be used as a meeting place during the entire exhibition period. Films will be shown there. In the space, you see signs you have seen in road traffic: guidelines, markers, or barriers. The two artists are using these signs. That way they show: there are barriers to exhibition making. For a long time, these barriers have been ignored. What is changing now? What challenges are there to it? And how does it change the relations of power?
In the space, there are various seating areas. There will be films shown there. Yolanda Zola Zoli van der Heide and Inga Zimprich selected these films. The films will be translated into different languages: German, English, Simple Language, Sign Language, Audio description, as well as Braille. [Blind people need audio description. It is described for them: What do you see in the film? Braille is a type face for blind people. You can feel it with your fingers and thereby read it.]

Part of Die Blaue Distanz (DE) are Anna Erdmann and Franziska Goralski, who have been working together as a duo since 2016. In their artistic work they are interested in queer ways of living and learning. Both studied the post-graduate master’s program “The Commoners’ Society” at the Sandberg-Instituut in Amsterdam from 2018-2020. Their work has been shown most recently at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin (2020), Festspielhaus Hellerau (2019), and Cities of Days, Los Angeles (2018), among others.

The exhibition is supported by the Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur and the Stiftung Niedersachsen.
