The European Media Art Festival is one of the most important plattforms for media art in Europe. In 2025, the festival will take place from 23 to 27 April. This year’s exhibition is on display at the Kunsthalle Osnabrück from 23 April to 25 May. 

This year’s theme is “Witnessing Witnessing”. The EMAF will explore the question: what role do witnesses play today? How do testimonies shape our view of the world? They might be statements, documents, individual objects, or entire archives. How can they affect politics and our lives?

Inga Seidler is curating the EMAF 2025 exhibition. [Curating means choosing the artworks for the exhibition.] It is about the festival theme of “Witnessing Witnessing”. The exhibition shows that being a witness is about more than just recording events. Artists use media such as video and interactive installations. [An installation is a work of art in space. An interactive installation involves the audience.] They use these media to show that power and responsibility influence the way historical events are presented, as well as trauma and violence. Visitors are invited to explore, make connections, and think critically about the information in the exhibition. In this way, they become witnesses, too.
