EMAF is the abbreviation for the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück. It is important for the international presentation of media art in Europe. [Media art uses motifs from the mass media. For example, from films or music videos]. It always takes place once a year. The festival provides an up-to-date overview of artistic films, installations, performances, digital formats and hybrid forms. It deals with personal and political themes. The festival is an international meeting place for audiences, artists, curators and students from various disciplines.
In 2024, the festival took place from 24 to 28 April. The festival includes an annual exhibition. It could be seen from 24 April to 26 May at the Kunsthalle Osnabrück.
This year, the EMAF was once again dedicated to a special theme. The main theme of the EMAF was Feelers, Sensors. This year, the EMAF was exploring the question: What role does sensory perception play in the human and non-human experience of the world. How do we see, smell, hear and feel the world? How do we find our way in the world? And how does technology change this?
Exhibition Feelers, Sensors
This year’s exhibition was entitled Feelers, Sensors. It was curated by Inga Seidler [Curated means: Inga Seidler has selected the artworks for the exhibition]. The exhibition dealt with the question of how we perceive the world with our senses. And how the perception of our surroundings is changing in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The term AI means: there are computers and computer programmes with new abilities. They can absorb and process information in a new way. This includes sensory information. [Sensory information is received via the sense of smell, taste, hearing or touch.] They can absorb this information in a similar way to humans. This raises questions. And the works in this exhibition dealt with these questions. What role will this new technology play in the future?
