People live very differently in our society. There is diversity. But at the same time, people are being excluded. Not all people have the same opportunities. They don’t have the same opportunities to learn. Or the same opportunities to find a place to live. They aren’t being seen. This problem exists in art houses and museums, too. From October, artist and filmmaker Timo Katz will show his sculpture Sperrmüll in the public space around the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. It confuses and challenges us by playing with dimensions, repetitions and perspectives. Can you spot it?

I would like
to get rid of bulky waste.
But I don’t really
want it to be taken away.
So I have to
tie it down. And secure it
against bad weather
and rummaging.
So it can remain in
a state that it perhaps has
not been intended for.

What are the boundaries that we encounter in everyday life? Are they the same boundaries for all people? Or are there differences? And what boundaries do we maintain as a society? Life seems like a maze in which not everyone can take the same paths and in which there are the most diverse dead ends. Let’s explore this maze together and see what a better society could look like.

Reading with Elona Beqiraj: „und wir kamen jeden Sommer“

Elona Beqiraj was born in 1997. Her parents come from Kosovo. Elona Beqiraj grew up in Germany. She has written a book called: und wir kamen jeden Sommer. Her book is about people who say: I am between two worlds. I feel torn back and forth and a stranger in both worlds. How does war and moving to another country change a family? Do you remain torn apart in the new place forever? Or can you arrive? In the new country. Perhaps in a new home? And with a person or with yourself?

The reading will take place at: Toros Restaurant, Bohmter Straße 13 A, 49074 Osnabrück

This event is part of the project Aşbildung by Slavs and Tatars. The artists Slavs and Tatars transform the outdoor area of a restaurant. It will become a meeting place. In accordance with the corona restrictions. But you can meet, exchange, talk, read, and eat together. You can watch and listen to artists from Osnabrück. The event series is developed by curator Bêriya (Özlem) Susan, supported by Hana Ćurak. The events are about these topics: What does home mean to me? Where is my home? Where is my family's home? What culture do I come from? And in which culture do I live now? Do I long for a home? How may I show myself? Do I belong? What is normal? What pressures do I experience?

Artothek

At an Artothek you can borrow art — just like from a library. That way, people can bring art into their homes for little money.

In the Artothek of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück you’ll find more than 1,300 art works — among them are graphic works, paintings, photographies and sculptures. The Artothek of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück also wants to give as many people access to art as possible. The art works in the Artothek can be borrowed by all people living in Osnabrück. In the future, we want to reach even more people with these art works. For that reason, the Artothek is getting reworked and restructured. The conditions for borrowing will also be changed.

That’s why, for the coming months, you won’t be able to borrow any art works at the Artothek of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. That way we can focus entirely on the restructuring. You already borrowed an art work from the Artothek and want to extend the lending period? That is still possible. In that case, please reach out to: haunhorst@osnabrueck.de.

Art in Public Space

You can now find all the information about the Art in Public Space collection on the new collections website. The link is below.

HERE you can find the new website Art in Public Space

The Kunsthalle Osnabrück is responsible for a collection of currently 44 works of art in public space. All of these works were placed in the urban space between 1950 and 2000. Many of them were placed in the area of the historic old town. Some also in the outer districts of the city. The works differ greatly in their artistic design. That is, they are made of very different materials. And the material was processed in very different ways. They have become part of the collection in different ways.

How is art perceived in public space? That can change over the years. Because urban society changes. Because urban development changes. Because the visitors change. That's why the collection of artworks is currently being reviewed. What condition are they in? But above all: how can they be made more visible again? How can they once again be the occasion for conversations and current questions?

History

In 1991, the city decided: a Kunsthalle should be founded in Osnabrück. The idea was: contemporary art should be exhibited there. Harald Szeemann was consulted on this. Harald Szeeman was a famous exhibition organizer and museum director from Switzerland. He co-developed the curatorial concept of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. That means: he had an idea about which type of art should be exhibited at the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. And how. He advised for “international perspectives and site specific installations”. Thereby he meant: the museum should be in exchange with other museums in different countries. But it should also fit the city and its own history. The first exhibition was in 1993. Founding director André Lindhorst curated it. Until 2013, he exhibited solo shows of artists like Elvira Bach, Lothar Fischer, Günther Uecker, Markus Lüpertz or thematical group exhibitions in the exhibition space of 1.300 square meters.

From 2013 to 2019, Dr. Julia Draganović managed the Kunsthalle Osnabrück as the director. Her exhibitions were very site specific. That means: you could clearly see the links to the architecture of the building. During this time, the programme set a focus on performance art. [Performance art is a type of artistic presentation. It is a performance. On a stage. In a museum. Or outside in the city.]

Here you can find information on exhibitions and projects before 2020.

From 2014 to 2020, the Kunsthalle Osnabrück was the headquarter of the IKT, the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art. During their annual conference, exhibition organizers of many different countries come together.
Since 2020, Anna Jehle and Juliane Schickedanz are the directors of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück.

Architecture

The Kunsthalle Osnabrück is located in the premises of the former Dominican church with its appendant monastery in the city center of Osnabrück. [The Dominicans are a religious order. A community of faith.] The “Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz” (“Monastery of the holy cross”) was built in Gothic style for the mendicant order of the Dominicans. [The Gothic style is recognizable by its pointed arches and high vaulted ceilings.] The origins of the building date back to the year 1283.
What followed is an eventful history. Parts of the building have been destroyed multiple times. Through fires, wars, or heist. But the monastery was rebuilt every time. Since 1803, there are no religious services conducted in the Dominican church building anymore. First it was used as a an armory and as a drill hall. [In a drill hall, soldiers are training and exercising.]
During World War II, bombs fell on the city center of Osnabrück. They destroyed 94 percent of the med
